The practical problem with southern Chester County is not that the chimneys are different. It is that a lot of contractors will not make the trip, so maintenance gets deferred, and by the time someone does come out the small repair has become a large one.

Different fuel, different maintenance
Wood
Burned hard through a full season, a wood stove or fireplace in an exterior chimney can move from light soot to hard stage two buildup in a single winter, and into glazed stage three if fires are regularly damped down overnight. Glazed creosote will not brush off and needs treatment or relining.
Seasoning is the biggest single lever you control. Wood at twenty percent moisture or below burns hot and clean. Wood cut this spring does not.
Pellet
Pellet stoves make very little creosote, which is why people assume they need nothing. What they make instead is fly ash, and it packs into the exhaust path, the vent run and the appliance itself.
A restricted pellet vent will either trip the stove out on a pressure switch or, worse, push exhaust into the room. These want annual clearing on their own terms, not on a wood stove schedule.

Do you actually come this far south?
Yes. Oxford, Nottingham, Lower Oxford, Elk Township and out toward the Lincoln University area are all on our route. It is a drive, not a barrier, and there is no trip charge inside our service area.
Does a pellet stove need sweeping like a wood stove?
It needs different attention rather than less. Pellet stoves produce far less creosote but generate fly ash that packs into the vent and the appliance exhaust path, and a choked pellet vent will shut the stove down or push exhaust into the room.
Our farmhouse chimney has never been lined. Is that a problem?
It is one of the more common findings on older properties down here, and yes, it matters. An unlined flue lets heat toward framing and lets acidic gases attack the masonry from the inside. Stainless relining is the fix.
We heat with wood as our main heat. How often should we sweep?
Annually at minimum, and if you are burning through the whole season a mid-winter check is worth having. What matters is cords burned and how you run the fire, not the calendar.
